Working While Studying in Canada – Guide for International Students 2025

Working While Studying as an International Student in Canada

As an international student in Canada, understanding employment laws is essential to ensure compliance with your study permit and achieve academic success.

Types of Student Work Permits in Canada

To work on-campus or off-campus, your study permit must explicitly mention the authorization. If it does, you do not need a separate work permit. However, for other work types, you must apply for a separate legal work permit.

 On-Campus Work

International students can work on campus without a separate work permit if they:

  • Hold a valid study permit

  • Are enrolled full-time at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)

  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN)

Jobs may include university-based roles, research assistantships, student union jobs, or private companies operating on campus.

What Is a SIN (Social Insurance Number)?

A SIN is a 9-digit national identification number issued to new residents, international students (Study Permit holders), and workers (Work Permit holders). It is essential for legal employment in Canada.

 Off-Campus Work

From November 8, 2024, international students can work up to 24 hours per week during academic terms without a separate permit.

Eligibility Conditions:

  • Full-time enrollment at a DLI

  • Program duration of at least six months, leading to a degree/diploma/certificate

  • The student has already started studying

  • A valid SIN is obtained

During official breaks (e.g., summer or winter holidays), students may work full-time if enrolled full-time before and after the break.

 Internships & Co-op Programs

If your program includes a mandatory internship or co-op experience, you must apply for a Co-op Work Permit, which allows full-time work in a curriculum-related role.

 Key Tips to Remember

✔ Check your study permit conditions — ensure it allows work.
✔ Maintain balance — working more than 24 hours/week may hurt your studies.
✔ Secure your SIN — apply via Service Canada promptly.

By following these rules, you can gain valuable work experience in Canada while pursuing your education.
