Do I Need a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) or a Temporary Resident Permit (TRP) to Enter Canada?
Foreign nationals entering Canada may require either a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), a Temporary Resident Permit (TRP), or neither, depending on their situation.
-
TRV is for individuals from countries whose citizens need a visa to enter Canada.
-
TRP is issued to individuals who are normally inadmissible to Canada (due to criminality, medical issues, financial problems, or misrepresentation) but have a justified reason to enter.
Both allow temporary entry, but their requirements, purpose, costs, and validity periods differ.
Key Differences Between TRV and TRP
| Factor | TRV (Temporary Resident Visa) | TRP (Temporary Resident Permit) |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Temporary entry for travel, visiting, work, or study | Temporary entry for individuals who are otherwise inadmissible |
| Who needs it? | Nationals of visa-required countries | Individuals inadmissible due to medical, criminal, financial issues, or misrepresentation |
| Eligibility | Must be admissible to Canada | Must justify why entry is necessary despite inadmissibility |
| Application Process | Standard visa application with financial and travel documents | Case-by-case assessment by an immigration officer |
| Allowed stay | Up to study/work permit validity, or 6 months for visitors (visa valid up to 10 years) | Up to 3 years depending on circumstances |
| Cost | $100 | $239.75 |
| Extension | Apply for new visa at least 2 months before expiry | Apply 3–6 months before expiration |
Note: Having a TRV or TRP does NOT guarantee entry. The final decision is made by the border officer upon arrival.
Who Can Receive a TRV?
Individuals from visa-required countries who want to enter Canada temporarily, such as:
-
International students with a study permit
-
Temporary workers with a work permit
-
Transit travelers
-
Tourists and visitors
Main Requirements for a TRV
Applicants must show:
-
Proof they will return to their home country
-
Proof of financial ability to cover their stay and return
-
Good physical health (medical exam if required)
-
No criminal record
-
Sufficient supporting documents to show admissibility
Who Needs a TRP?
A TRP is for individuals who are inadmissible due to:
-
Medical issues: risk to public health or burden on the healthcare system
-
Criminality: serious charges or past convictions
-
Misrepresentation: providing false information
-
Financial problems: inability to support themselves
-
Immigration violations: unauthorized work or overstaying
A TRP allows temporary entry if the purpose is justified, such as:
-
Essential business travel
-
Important family events
-
Caring for a sick family member
-
Emergency transit through Canada
Validity and Conditions of TRP and TRV
-
TRP: 1 day to 3 years; extendable with justification
-
TRV: Visitor stay up to 6 months; visa validity up to 10 years (depending on passport and biometrics)
-
Entry type (single or multiple) is decided by the officer
-
TRP can include a work or study permit if issued for more than 6 months
Who Needs an eTA (Visa-Exempt Travelers)?
Nationals of visa-exempt countries must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA):
-
Required for air travel
-
Valid for stays up to 6 months
-
Applies to most European countries and some Asian nations
Exceptions — do NOT need a TRV or eTA:
-
U.S. citizens
