Who Needs a Visitor Visa (Temporary Resident Visa) to Canada?

Most travelers need a Visitor Visa to enter Canada—even if they are just transiting through a Canadian airport. This official document, also known as a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), is stamped into your passport and confirms that you meet the requirements for entry.

Immigration officers may issue a single-entry or multiple-entry visa with a validity of up to 10 years, or until your passport or biometrics expire (whichever comes first).

 Length of Stay in Canada

Most TRV holders are allowed to stay in Canada for up to 6 months.
Upon arrival, a border services officer may adjust the duration and record your departure date in your passport or issue a Visitor Record.

If your passport is not stamped, you may remain in Canada for 6 months from the date of entry or until your passport or biometrics expire—whichever is sooner.

Note: Those arriving with a Super Visa after June 22, 2023, may be permitted to stay for up to 5 years. You can request an entry stamp from the officer, even if entering through an automated kiosk.

You may need either a Visitor Visa or an eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) depending on:

• Your travel document (e.g., passport)

• The country of issue of your travel document

• Your nationality

• Your mode of travel (air, land, sea)
