Essential Items to Pack in Your Carry-On for Traveling to Canada

Before your trip to Canada, it’s crucial to prepare a carry-on bag with all the items you might need during your journey. Among the most important things to pack are identification documents and travel-related materials, which we’ll detail below.

 Must-Have Documents:

  • Passport

  • Printed flight ticket

  • National ID, birth certificate, military service card, and driver’s license with certified translations

  • International Driver’s License (if available)

  • Marriage/divorce/child custody documents (if applicable) with translations

  • Resume and work history with recommendation letters (academic/work migration)

  • Acceptance letter from school, college, or university (for yourself or your children)

  • Academic degrees and transcripts with translations + language test results

 Cash and Valuables:

  • Cash: Any amount you're carrying must be declared. Carrying over $10,000 CAD without declaration is subject to fines.

  • Jewelry/Gold: If carrying more than personal use, declare the weight/value and keep invoices separate from the items. Take photos of each item for documentation.

 Important Contact Info:

  • Names, phone numbers, and addresses of anyone you may need to contact

  • Hotel or temporary accommodation booking confirmations

 Baggage Allowance:

Each airline has its own rules, but typically:

  • 2 checked bags of 23kg each are allowed

  • 1 carry-on bag, usually 8–12kg, depending on airline rules

  • Business/First Class travelers may carry one extra small bag

 Excess Baggage Fees:

Overweight luggage will incur additional charges. Whether your bag is 1kg or 23kg overweight, airlines usually charge the equivalent of an extra full bag. Always check your airline’s baggage policy in advance to avoid surprise fees.
