Master Out or Backtracking in Canada: Switching from PhD to Master’s Degree

In many Canadian universities, there is an option called Master Out or Back Track for PhD students. Sometimes during their doctoral studies, students may decide to withdraw from the PhD program and instead graduate with a Master’s degree. This decision can be based on various reasons, which we’ll explore below.

Why Do Students Choose Master Out?

1. Faster Entry into the Job Market
PhD programs usually take 3 to 5 years. Some students prefer to complete a Master's degree instead and begin working sooner to gain practical experience and income.

2. Lack of Interest in Research or Teaching
Academic research and teaching aren't suited for everyone. Some prefer to work in industry, tech companies, organizations, or even start their own businesses.

3. Great Job Opportunities with a Master’s Degree
In Canada, many high-paying positions in fields like IT, engineering, business, and data science are accessible with just a Master’s degree—without needing a PhD.

4. Immigration and Permanent Residency Goals
For some, the main goal of studying in Canada is immigration. Completing a Master’s degree allows them to apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) and later permanent residency.

How Does the Master Out Process Work?

The student must first discuss their intention with their supervisor. With the professor’s approval, the university may issue a Master’s degree. In most cases, the student may be required to complete additional courses or submit a final thesis/project.

Is Master Out Always Possible?

While many Canadian universities allow this option, some do not. If the university doesn't offer Master Out, the student might not receive any degree upon withdrawal. Moreover, the supervisor’s consent plays a crucial role and must be handled carefully.
