What Is the Difference Between Single-Entry and Multiple-Entry Visas to Canada?

Single vs. Multiple Entry Visa for Canada – Key Differences in 2025

A single-entry visa lets you enter Canada once; a multiple-entry visa allows unlimited entries while valid. IRCC decides the type based on your profile. Exceptions exist for trips to the U.S. and Saint Pierre. Validity may vary.

What Is the Difference Between Single-Entry and Multiple-Entry Visas to Canada?

One of the most common questions about Canadian visas is the difference between a Single-Entry Visa and a Multiple-Entry Visa.

 Main Difference: Number of Entries

  • Single-Entry Visa: Allows you to enter Canada only once.

  • Multiple-Entry Visa: Allows you to enter and leave Canada multiple times until the visa expires.

Which Visa Will I Get?

You don’t need to choose the type of visa yourself.
IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) will decide based on your situation and documents.

 Multiple-Entry Visa

  • Allows unlimited entries while the visa is valid

  • Usually valid up to 10 years, or until the passport or biometric data expires—whichever comes first

  • Validity is determined by the visa officer

  • You must enter Canada before the visa expiry date

 Single-Entry Visa

  • Allows only one entry to Canada

  • Issued in specific cases, such as:

    • Visa fee exemptions with limited visits (e.g., official visits)

    • Attending a special event or tour

    • Entering for short-term study or work (under 6 months)

    • Special rules applied to your nationality by the Canadian government

  • After leaving Canada, you usually need to apply for a new visa to re-enter

Exception:
If you only travel to the United States (including its territories) or Saint Pierre and Miquelon, and return directly to Canada, you do not need a new visa.
